Work of our Knights and Dames

Many of our members are individually involved at local parishes as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, and Choir Leaders or Members.

At the national and archdiocesan level, some are involved in various organisations serving the least, the lost, and the last. Some of these organisations are:

aLife, a secular, non-profit voluntary welfare organisation committed to educating, advising, and supporting women and their families on issues related to the unborn child and the mother’s reproductive health. Its principal activities are providing of counseling services to expectant mothers and their respective husbands, who are contemplating abortions; running a children enrichment program which aims to strengthen character, identity, and resilience to enhance a child’s self esteem and improve literacy and life skills for those in the lower income group under the brand name of Caterpillar Club; and delivering public talks and education programs on pregnancy related and family life subjects.

Apex Harmony Lodge, a home to cater to the special needs of dementia patients. It has sufficient facilities to cater for 210 residential and 20 day-care patients. The Centre promotes a culture of life and respect for the dignity and value of each person and reaches out to children, women, and families who experience injustice. The Centre also provides a holistic and quality pre-school programme for children to grow in dignity, love, graciousness, and responsibility.

St. Gabriel’s Foundation, a Catholic charity providing continuity to the Gabrielite mission; providing education and assisting its pupils to grow up as morally upright citizens, to help its pupils who are in conditions of need, hardship, or distress. In doing so, the Foundation seeks to carry on the good work of the Brothers of St. Gabriel. The Foundation will be setting up a common School Pocket Money Fund for the schools under its charge. In addition, the Foundation will also introduce a Counselling Program to help the social and emotional well-being of the students.

Caritas, the official social and community arm of the Singapore Archdiocese. Caritas was set up to provide leadership to the Catholic community in Singapore in fulfilling the Church’s social mission for the benefit of the broader community. It raises funds and make grants for the charity work of the Church and raise and match volunteers with the Church’s charity organisations.

Catholic Alpha Advisory & Coordinating Team, established in 2010 to actively promote Alpha Course and to coordinate the efforts in all parishes in the Singapore Archdiocese. The Alpha Course is run to provide participants with an opportunity to explore the meaning of life from a Christian perspective. The Alpha Course has recently been expanded incorporating the Catholic elements. Also, Alpha International has produced two Parenting Courses to assist parents to build relationship and communication with their children and teenagers.

Confederation Internationale de la Societe de Saint-Vincent de Paul, the global body of the St. Vincent de Paul Societies which assist and participate in all works of charity and promote better understanding of the public to the needs of the poor and underprivileged and to encourage the public to take active part in alleviating the sufferings and needs of the poor and needy. An essential precept of the Society’s work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served. The Society recognises that it must assume, also, a role of advocacy for those who are defenseless or voiceless.

Mount Alvernia Hospital, owned and supervised by the Franciscan Missionary of Divine Motherhood. Mount Alvernia is a general acute care Singapore hospital with tertiary medical capabilities and two multi-disciplinary medical specialist centers with a network of over 1,000 accredited specialists spanning more than 20 medical disciplines ranging from cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedic, ophthalmology, to general surgery and much more. The hospital has an established reputation for obstetric, gynaecology, and paediatrics services. We have served generations of families and remain a popular choice for maternity services, parentcraft, and baby care.

Singapore National Paralympic Council, Singapore’s member representative to the International Paralympic Committee and other international para-sports affiliates. Its vision is to foster Paralympic solidarity through realising the fullest potential of athletes with disabilities at international platforms and boosting teamwork with local sports organisations.
