Order of Malta (Thailand) Hosts Fifth Asia Pacific Summer Camp for Disabled Youth

26/09/2024

The Order of Malta (Thailand) has successfully organized its fifth Asia Pacific Summer Camp for Disabled Youth, continuing a tradition that began in 2017. This year’s camp follows successful events held in Singapore (2017), the Philippines (2018), Hong Kong (2019), and Australia (2022). As part of a broader initiative inspired by the Order’s longstanding tradition of hosting similar camps across Europe, this regional version was established to make participation more accessible, given the high costs of travelling to Europe.

For over thirty years, the Order of Malta has been committed to offering summer camp experiences for disabled youth aged 18 to 30. These camps are designed to build a sense of community, promote cultural exchange, and help participants overcome personal challenges. Since its inception in 1984, the annual camp has provided invaluable holiday experiences for young people with disabilities, supported by volunteers from over 25 countries in Europe and beyond. The initiative was first brought to the Asia Pacific region in 2017, with Singapore hosting the inaugural event.

What can participants expect from the Asia Pacific Summer Camp? The program features a diverse range of activities, including games, workshops, excursions, cultural nights, and moments of prayer. Participants enjoy the attentive care and support of dedicated volunteers and members of the Order of Malta. The camp is not just a fun escape; it is a treasured opportunity for disabled youths to experience a strong sense of belonging, build friendships, and receive emotional support within a nurturing community.

Participant’s Reflection: Lynn Chang’s Experience at the Asia Pacific Summer Camp

Lynn Chang, a participant from Singapore, recently shared her heartfelt reflections on her experience at the Asia Pacific Summer Camp for Disabled Youth in Pattaya. Her journey began with an overwhelming sense of excitement and appreciation upon arriving in Bangkok.

“On Day 1, when we landed at the airport and saw so many people there to welcome us, I felt like a VIP. I was amazed, thinking ‘WOW!’ The warm reception didn’t stop there. When we reached the hotel in the afternoon, the welcoming continued with flowers around my neck and a performance that left me speechless. It was my very first time experiencing something so special, and it made our five days in Pattaya incredibly memorable and worthwhile!” Lynn enthusiastically recounted.

Regarding the camp activities, Lynn particularly enjoyed Days 2 and 4. “Initially, I was quite shy and hesitant to make new friends. However, on Day 2, I gradually started to open up and began forming new friendships. By Day 4, even though I was physically tired and a bit emotional, I had a fantastic time at the garden, where I saw large Thai elephants, various animals, and even dinosaurs!”

Lynn also appreciated the daily Mass before each activity, finding it a meaningful way to start the day. “The Mass was a beautiful reminder to put God first in everything and to remember that His love surpasses all.”

The camp, according to Lynn, provided valuable lessons in emotional and physical resilience, and emphasized the importance of seeking God amidst life’s busyness. “It taught me to be stronger emotionally and physically, to seek God first, and to build a social network with new people. I even learned some basic Thai phrases!”

One of Lynn’s most cherished memories was her first international trip for a youth camp. “It was my very first time flying to another country for such an event, and I can honestly say it was the best trip ever. I would highly recommend this camp to my friends—it offers an incredible opportunity to meet people from around the world and gain wonderful exposure.”

Lynn concluded her reflection with heartfelt thanks. “I am deeply grateful to both the Singapore and Thailand teams for making this trip so special and memorable. Without your support, this experience wouldn’t have been possible. I hope to join the camp again next year. God bless you all!”
